Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG)

14 years of successful long term results of Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery ( CABG )

Mr. S. Shah is a Kenyan citizen. He came to India in 2005  for routine cardiac check-up for his heart health. In investigations it was detected that he had critical blockages in left coronary system. He was advised Coronary Artery Bypass surgery ( CABG ). Which was then performed by Senior Heart Surgeon Dr. Pavan Kumar at Lilavati  Hospital.

His surgery involved bypassing left Anterior descending Artery by Left Internal Memmary  Artery ( LIMA )  &  Circumflex artery by Saphenous Venus Grafts (SVG). Surgery was uneventful & recovery was smooth. He went back to his country after 10 days. He followed up strict diet plan & medications with regular yearly check – ups in  India. Six years later in 2011 he underwent routine cardiac CT scan showing patent bypass grafts. Yearly stress test were negative for ischemia. In 2019 November again he underwent Cardiac CT Scan Coronary Angiogram which showed patent

Well functioning bypass grafts after 14 years of CABG. This is excellent surgical outcome after 14 Long years. During these years he has heart healthy live normal life, walks  8-10 km / days & done all activity without any problems.

Discussion –

Multivessel coronary artery  disease is best  treated by Coronary bypass surgery for good long term results. Many International studies like Syntax trial has shown clear advantages of Coronary artery Bypass surgery as compare to PTCA. There are less interventions , less hospitalisation, & less mortality in Coronary Bypass surgery group than PTCA group clearly shown in Syntax Trial. This is very evident in this patient also that he has lived last 14 years free of any Heart related problems after his Coronary artery Bypass Surgery in 2005.
